Presented by Chesham Musical Theatre Company
Gypsy is the tale of the archetypal stage mother, Rose Hovick, who will go to any lengths to showcase the talents of her daughters, especially her favourite, Baby June. Constantly dreaming up routines to showcase Baby June, Momma Rose is as desperate for her kids (and the other children she drags in as part of her act) to hit the big time as she is for them to stay young. Rose is tested as her children grow into young women who wish to branch out on their own. Meanwhile, Rose’s long-suffering partner, Herbie, is pushed to the limit by her obsessive need for her children to become stars.
The musical contains many songs that became popular standards, including "Everything's Coming up Roses", "Together (Wherever We Go)", "Small World", "You Gotta Get a Gimmick", "Let Me Entertain You", "All I Need Is the Girl", and "Rose's Turn".
It is frequently considered one of the crowning achievements of mid-20th century musical theatre.
Based on the memoirs of the real-life Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical is the work of composer Jule Styne, lyricist Stephen Sondheim and writer Arthur Laurents.
